Welcome to our new Badlands Tornado Photo and Lecture Tour! This tour gets its name from the vast regions of scenic badland areas in the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming and western Nebraska. During mid to late June, we usually are chasing supercells and tornadoes in the northern plains and the high plains, with crossings into the Canadian prairie provinces as well. This tour takes advantage of the active severe weather that is often found in the northlands. By mid-June moisture has made its way into the region via transport from the Gulf and from evapotranspiration that occurs when winter snows melt and spring rains dampen the ground.  In addition to the badland’s formations and old abandoned farmsteads found here, you may also encounter yellow canola fields and blue flax fields to add plenty of color to your photos. Occasionally, you might also witness the northern lights as we have several times, as well as noctilucent clouds! Storms and tornadoes are typically slower moving late in the season and can also be quite picturesque! On this adventure you are likely to encounter fewer storm chasers, enabling you to enjoy in relative privacy the serenity of the open prairie lands and the severe thunderstorms that frequent this region. Imagine watching a supercell for an extended period and not in a hurry to relocate to stay up with it! A dream!!!! Also, you don’t have to be a photographer to enjoy the beauty and power witnessed on this tour!!!!!

Another feature of this tour is the lecture portion. Roger will conduct 2 separate “Weather101” talks covering such things as how a storm forms, what makes a storm develop into a supercell thunderstorm, and even looking at how to forecast using surface observations, satellite, model basics.

Roger has written a 50-page copyrighted “Weather101 pamphlet” given to each tour participant that is yours to keep and take notes in. We typically spend an hour on 2 mornings discussing various severe weather topics and then always chase and do photography during the afternoon and evening hours.

In addition, Roger has prepared a presentation on photography techniques when encountering severe thunderstorms. This presentation will cover positioning, equipment needed, setting up for your shot, mitigating dangerous risks and more.  Roger is an award-winning photographer whose images have appeared in National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, The Weather Channel and numerous places around the world. He was also the winner of the prestigious International Photography Awards in 2024 for his series of supercell images in the Landscapes section.

This tour is 9 days in length, providing enough time to traverse this storm-rich region of the North American Plains while having ample opportunities to photograph the incredible storms often seen in mid to late June in the beautiful northern plains/high plains.  We also keep this tour smaller than our core storm chasing tours due to the nature of it and the need for more time for photographers to get those prized images.

Since this is our final tour of the season, if at the end of your tour the weather pattern is very active, you will have the option to stay for longer and chase another 1-2 days at a rate of $450 per day! This is NEW for 2028 and allows you to stay and enjoy an active pattern for a day or two if you so choose.
